A two-spirit woman named Walks with Spirits, who lived in a time of mysticism, heard voices whispering on the wind in the distant past. These voices gave her the ability to call animals. She wants to rally her childhood buddy Laughing Brook to her cause, though.
Laughing Brook, the daughter of a shaman and a herbalist-midwife, is a prominent member of her community and is responsible for its upkeep. Her strongest desire, other from spending the rest of her life with Walks with Spirits, is to become a healer like her mother.
Both women must learn to face the challenges that lie ahead of them in a land where danger lurks behind every tree and honour is more important than life after an misunderstanding shatter their hopes for happiness.
The experience of reading this book was great. I don’t read many spirituality-related books, so I wasn’t sure if I should pick this one up. However, I yearned to read more historical fiction. And I’m so happy I did since this was such an amazing story. Strong, spiritual, and loving, Walks with Spirits is a beautifully written character.
Finding a character as wonderful as Spirits is difficult. She was a fascinating subject to read about because it was all new to me. The way those two felt about one another and the love they shared were beautifully written, as was the gender representation.
I did believe that the section about domestic violence should have been better explained. Overall, I thought that this was a well written novel with a strong message, and I especially liked the finale. It was a fantastic read.

The Review
Walks with Spirits
This was a truly beautiful story. The author’s ability to balance the heartfelt LGBTQ romance of this novel with the culture and history of the Indigenous people of the North American continent was superb, and the added elements of fantasy-driven narrative based upon the mythos and belief systems of the Indigenous people added both depths to the cast of characters and a fantastic amount of world-building. The heart of this narrative fell to the two amazing protagonists and one of the strongest LGBTQ romances I’ve read this year so far, Walks with Spirits and Laughing Brook.
