Who said ladies in their 60s couldn’t solve crimes? They were mistaken. In Unnatural Causes, Madeline relocates to a brand-new retirement neighbourhood that has all the safety features and luxuries she’ll require. Her offspring have ensured that. But as soon as she arrives, her neighbour is discovered dead, and despite both of her adult children trying to talk her out of it, she is determined to seek out what happened.
I enjoy reading mysteries. I read Nancy Drew books as a child. Since I’ve turned fifty, I’ve noticed that young women and men of all ages are the main characters in all cosy mysteries. This novel was purely enjoyable. The main character was a little older than me to start with.
Yay! Finally a woman of age who gets the job done. But it was so much more than that. The supporting cast was excellent. The ancient geek, the mystery woman no one sees, the older woman who believes she is still in her thirties, and the person who could never pronounce anyone else’s name were among them.
Oh, and the granddaughter who is smarter than everyone put together and the daughter who may or may not work for a covert government organisation. This story’s main character was driven by her capacity to put her late husband’s training as a police detective to use while making strange new friends.
I love mysteries and constantly attempt to figure out who did it. I guessed correctly on this one, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the narrative. The subsequent one interests me. I’ll be keeping up with this author. This novel deserves a chance if you like mysteries. You won’t be sorry.
About The book
Madeline Delarouse always thought growing old would take a lot longer. But when her adult kids move her into an upscale retirement community on the west coast of Florida, she fears her best days are behind her. That is, until her new neighbor is found dead – a golf club stuck in her head.
Against the orders of her sarcastic son and exceptionally well-informed daughter, Madeline teams up with a wisecracking New York retiree to figure out whodunnit. Could it be the Black Widow living across the street? The mysterious Colombian in the colored caftan? Or the ex-Super Bowl quarterback who just can’t stand losing?
Against a backdrop of perpetually sunny skies, endless activities and lots and lots of over sixty-fives in golf carts, Madeline has to find out who killed her neighbor and why before her nosiness makes her the killer’s next victim.
The Review
Unnatural Causes
After one page of the book, Unnatural Causes, the first book of the Egret’s Loft Murder Mystery Series by T. E. Harkins, I was hooked. The characters were spot on and interacted with humor that I did not expect. It is a very engaging story about people with “advanced life experience” living in a shared community. The residents do not want for anything – activities galore, personalized homes, tech crazy appliances – but what happens when a murder happens in their ideal community – and with a golf club no less. Can’t wait to read the next.
