Margo, Dan’s estranged mother, unexpectedly knocks on his home, but she is not greeted with hugs and kisses. There is no doubt that a year is not long enough for them to have been separated. Their language and tone are laced with animosity and contempt for one another.
She asserts that she is only there to see her granddaughter Tori. Dan unwillingly lets his mother inside his house, where she sneers at his wife (Lily’s) attractiveness, cooking abilities, cleaning abilities, and even the dinnerware. Lily vowed not to lower herself in response to Margo’s criticism and harshness.
Whereas most people would have retaliated, Lily chose to accept that Margo was not going to change. Although Margo’s actions are not acceptable to Dan and Lily, sixteen-year-old Tori finds them hilarious. In stark contrast to Margo’s reception from her son and daughter-in-law, she greeted grammy with open arms.
As an icy blizzard hits the area, the day gets worse and worse. You may think the day couldn’t get any worse being cooped up indoors with no internet, water, heat, or power, but you’d be wrong. It’s time to confront the past as well as whatever lurks in the snowstorm that leaves bodies in its wake. The brutal and graphic assaults absolutely horrified me! The events that were taking place in this bitterly cold climate and the presence of evil left me dumbfounded, especially the last few chapters.
No matter the weather, The White by Matt Micheli is a terrifying book, but it was a million times scarier after my state was pummelling by snow and ice. I read it while occasionally peering out the window to see if there could be something bad waiting for me in the storm. I adored this novel because it made my bones tremble with unease. You should get a copy of The White if you enjoy horror stories, long or short.
About The Book
Things can change fast in Texas, especially the weather.
Uninvited and unwelcomed, Dan’s estranged mother Margo shows up at his doorstep moments before a freak snowstorm hits their small Texas town. The arctic storm comes fast and hard, trapping Dan and his wife, their teen daughter, and her boyfriend inside with the malicious old woman who seems hell-bent on destroying everything her son and daughter-in-law have built together.
Long-buried family secrets are exhumed, causing tensions to flare and tempers to erupt. As things spiral out of control and anger consumes the household, inside is Hell. But outside in the snow there is something far more sinister. Something full of rage. Something violent. And that something has a taste for blood.
The Review
The White
Wow, this is a very intense horror read. If you like sitting on the edge of your seat, then this is a book for you. I was biting my nails the whole time. This is a very short read, I read this in about an hour since it is only 60 pages, but it really packs a punch for such a short book. I loved the characters. Margo is someone you hate until the end, then you sort of like her, she is mean and very self-centered. She never has a nice thing to say about anyone. The ending was a surprise, not what I was thinking at all. The ending did leave me wondering if Margo coming for a visit brought the blizzard after all. I only wished this book was longer. So if you love horror/thriller books and need a quick read this is a book you don't want to pass up.
