The ambition and narrative depth hinted at in The Unity Game’s premise drew me in. It took some time for me to get into this novel and get into a reading groove. Finding the actual cause is a little challenging. It wasn’t that since I love using different narrative writing formats.
The idea of “time being fluid” wasn’t either… Such literary and philosophical complexity usually excite me. I believe it was caused by Meriel’s shallow and unlayered approach to character development. I found the human characters’ motivations and actions—whether they were alive or dead—to be implausible.
I thought one character’s levels of hostility were occasionally too high (and inexplicably without consequence). There were a lot of unfinished threads. The story arc of the advanced civilization was the one that I found most interesting and felt the strongest connection to.
I went on despite my doubts because this book had received such raving ratings on Goodreads and Amazon. It was obvious from the beginning that this novel’s payoff was planned to occur near its climax. Unfortunately, this reader’s perseverance did not yield enough of a reward.
A story that dives between realities and manifestations of existence, this expertly crafted and genre-bending novel invites discussion and rewards multiple readings. The Unity Game is literary fiction at its most thought-provoking and ambitious. In The Unity Game, Meriel has taken a daring stance on some engrained notions. Unfortunately, this book’s ambition outranks its execution.
