The Maid, Nita Prose’s debut book, is one of the most eagerly anticipated new books of 2022. The book rights have already been acquired in 29 countries, and Universal has also purchased the film rights with Florence Pugh scheduled to star as the title heroine. And I’m happy to say that this book definitely lives up to the hype.
There are so many fascinating and sophisticated facets to this book. This is a clever cosy crime mystery on one level. It is a captivating character study on the other hand. Molly Gray, a.k.a. Molly the Maid, is at ease and content with clear-cut regulations but lost in the “grey” of interpersonal interactions.
Of course, her eccentricities and tendency to take things literally lead to humorous moments. But as we all know, some people walk harder journeys than others.
Emotional Depth
The Maid by Nita Prose is a fantastic novel, but what makes it excellent is its ability to surprise even the most devoted reader. It accomplishes this in a variety of ways, but primarily through the depth of its emotions. This book has “genuine emotional heft,” as the NY Times so eloquently put it.
Talking about the main character arc or supporting cast would always ruin the experience. But let’s just say that Prose gives readers a powerful reminder that calm waters have depth. And, the worth of traditional goodness.
Because I was so invested in the characters, the more I read, the less I wanted the story to come to a close. My congratulations go to Prose for writing The Maid in such a way that is both thought-provoking and emotionally intelligent and rewarding.
About The Book
The world is Molly the maid’s alone. a nonentity. She is accustomed to remaining undetectable in her work at the Regency Grand Hotel, where she plumps pillows and removes dirt, dust, and personal information from passing guests. Why should anyone pay attention to a maid like her?
However, Molly is thrust into the spotlight when she finds Mr. Black, a notorious guest, quite dead in his bed. It won’t be simple to clean up this mess. And as Molly becomes involved in the search for the truth, following the hints that are whispered in the Regency Grand’s hallways, she discovers a power she was unaware existed. Even though she is only a maid, what does she see that others don’t?
The Maid is a narrative about how the truth isn’t necessarily black and white; it’s discovered in the murkier, greyer spaces in between. It’s escapist, entertaining, and introduces a wonderfully original character.
The Review
The Maid
Loved it! This book places you inside the plight of a young girl with autism who is trying to support herself after the death of her grandmother. She's a literalist, a perfectionist, living a life of repetition, which makes her vulnerable to people who take advantage of her disability. Yet she is smarter and tougher than she is given credit.
