Even though I tend to lean more toward literature, I have always had a soft spot for Matthew Reilly’s writing ever since a friend suggested his book Ice Station many years ago. Reviews of his work can be found on this website for Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves, Hell Island, The Six Sacred Stones, and The Five Greatest Warriors. Reilly’s books are among the ones I’ve read the most of all authors. Why? thus they are enjoyable. They are also cinematic.
Although Reilly has always had a great vision, this undertaking’s scope and chutzpah are impressive. His characters are always vivid, but in this instance the setting is as well. Oh, and he isn’t hesitant to kill off characters in the name of a compelling narrative.
Dr. Cassandra Jane “CJ” Cameron is the first female lead in any of Reilly’s books, however there have always been fierce female characters in his books. According to the cliché, CJ has baggage but is also intelligent, resourceful, and resilient. She also commands respect. She is amazing. I also felt it was brilliant to pit a blonde female heroine against the power of the Chinese political apparatus.
A superb sidekick, who serves as the heart to counterbalance the carnage, is another thing Reilly understands the value of in an adventure thriller. I didn’t believe Scarecrow’s “Bertie” could be topped, but with The Great Zoo of China, he truly outdid himself. Although a dog is not CJ’s sidekick, it is obvious that the author is a dedicated dog owner.
Get some popcorn*, a soothing beverage, and buckle in for a trip to The Great Zoo of China if you’re looking for undiluted pure amusement over the holidays.
About The Book
The Chinese government has kept it a secret for forty years. No one had ever heard of the animal species they have discovered. The world will be amazed. The largest zoo ever built is where the Chinese are now ready to reveal their astounding discovery.
A small group of dignitaries and journalists have been taken to the remote Chinese zoo to witness its magnificent animals for the first time. One of them is Dr. Cassandra Jane “CJ” Cameron, a reptile expert and writer for National Geographic. Their Chinese hosts assure the guests that they would be amazed by these creatures, that they are completely secure, and that nothing can go wrong.
The Review
The Great Zoo of China
Matthew Reilly excels at suspension of disbelief...all of his books are whirlwinds of action and adventure and move so fast it's hard to keep up when you're propping open your eyelids in the wee hours of the morning because you have to see what happens next...and what happens next is never what you expected. This book rivals Creightons Jurassic Park and if Hollywood isn't beating a path to Reillys door they should be.
