The Forgotten Sky was really detailed and the world building was extensive, however the length occasionally made it difficult to read. It was close to 560 pages long. It took each of their tasks and ultimately brought them all together in the effort to destroy Northrite by weaving the experiences and adventures of six different people together.
This book is more of a sci-fi fantasy in my opinion. It is sci-fi in the sense that it takes place in space and has numerous fantastical worlds, animals, and races that are evocative of the Star Wars universe. However, a lot of the legends, lore, and talents were pure fantasy.
The writing was thorough and descriptive. The writing mainly brought the various worlds and characters to life, albeit there were a few words that occasionally felt a little out of place. There is a single event that sets off a sexual assault. Even though the writing was in the present tense, it was a very small flaw and a matter of personal taste, so I didn’t take away any stars for it.
Numerous diverse races and entities are mentioned. As an elemiscist, Nyranna possesses unique skills and abilities include telepathic communication known as whispering as well as the capacity to stride over space. I liked Seeva a lot. I felt connected to her character right from chapter one and her fury over the senseless killing of endangered creatures in order for Northrite to gain mining rights.
Be prepared to devote time to reading this book if you decide to do so. I felt like I didn’t give this book the time it required to be appreciated fully because I read it during a three-week period of unusually high activity. I would have to put the book down for a few days, and when I picked it back up again, it was difficult to stay engaged and fall into the plot’s flow. I intend to read it again soon, and I strongly advise holding off until you have lots of spare time to commit to it because it is not a weekend read and, in all fairness, shouldn’t be.
I had to read this book several times to make sure I hadn’t missed anything and to refresh my memory of the events because there are so many interconnected moving components. Even though it seemed excessively long, the author developed an entire universe in this novel, and it required that length to thoroughly examine all of the characters.
If the author had wished to divide it into smaller pieces, it could have also been made to work as a trilogy. Epic sci-fi and fantasy readers will adore this book if they can invest the necessary time to completely comprehend the plot and appreciate its intricacy.
About The Book
Unrest smolders in a galaxy where most citizens endure the oppressive society of the Northrite corporation. Run by six masked councilmembers, the Northrite exploit the powers of Elemiscists—those with magical abilities—and keep them as indentured servants.
When a nearby sun turns bloodred and begins pulsing, people flee their homes, and the millennia-old government is plunged into chaos. Six diverse individuals from across the galaxy become entwined in a struggle for survival and to overthrow the Northrite corporation.
These six share a strange dream: a figure composed only of shadow, holding the pulsing red sun in its palm. Jaycken is an audacious and sarcastic young military recruit who dreams of harnessing Elemiscist powers, and Rynn is a sheltered but perceptive young woman who flees her home planet in search of her missing mother.
Nyranna is a cunning Elemiscist slave, seeking to free her people from oppression, and Seeva, an operative and activist, tracks down a branch of the Northrite corporation that funds poachers and decimates endangered creatures for profit. Elion is a morbid bounty hunter, and Cirx is a medieval knight who seeks revenge for the death of his people.
The Review
The Forgotten Sky
A truly unique story. Complex, but easy enough to follow and stay engaged with each of the diverse characters. Looking for comps I would say it has shades of Game of Thrones, Star Wars, The Fifth Season, and The Expanse Series, but it's really its own story. A nice blend of elements from fantasy and sci-fi with some mystery in there as well. I was initially a little hesitant at the length of the book, but it reads much quicker than you would expect and frankly I found it hard to put down. Great read, that I think you need to experience!
PROS
- The blending of sci-fi and fantasy is extremely well done.
- The characters have heart that drips off the pages.
- Strong group of characters, world building at its best.
CONS
- Beta readers and good critical editing is needed.
- Full of imagery and comparisons that you can't follow the story or plot.
