The mage wars are now only known from history, and magic has maintained a lengthy peace. However, in Mark Stay’s The End of Magic, one rogue warmonger has observed heavenly indications that the period of peace and great kings is about to change in his favour.
Magic is a natural talent derived from the lapis moon’s power. Sander Bree, a kings magician, and Rosheen Katell, a lone mage who soars around on her gryphon and aids those in need, are the two mages the novel follows, “one being a witch who thinks she’s a warlock.”
Despite the fact that they are both practitioners of magic, the differences between the two are immediately apparent, and their morals and personalities are also well-defined. The purpose of this is for Stay to demonstrate that, in reality, they are the same and, upon the destruction of the lapis moon, both find themselves on the wrong side of the sword.
Even the mercenary turned would-be king, Haldor Frang, has a remarkable personality that makes him distinctive. All of the characters are believable and admirable. This fantasy book is jam-packed with action. It becomes nearly impossible to put this book down as things heat up and puzzle pieces begin to fit together.
The fact that Mark Stay gave us a fantasy book but removed the magic halfway through is what made it so special. The events that follow are horrifying, heartbreaking, and gut-wrenching.
The End of Magic by Mark Stay is an enormous, tumultuous fantasy similar to those written by Joe Abercrombie and Brandon Sanderson, and it’s well worth reading in one sitting!
About The Book
Rosheen Katell is a wandering mage and, with Anzu her griffin, she’s worked hard to build a reputation as a trustworthy truth seer. She never lies, never kills.
Sander Bree is a royal mage. He lives an easy life advising the king on matters of court and politics, but dreams of an apocalypse are giving him massive anxiety attacks.
Very soon, their magic will be gone. A cataclysmic event will change their lives and world forever. Sander must keep a promise to save the life of a young girl that would have been difficult enough with magic, but is a suicide mission without it.
Rosheen is forced to side with a murderous warlord, and her once-solid principles are tested and found wanting. Both will be set against one another in a war unlike anything the world has seen before, in this sweeping fantasy of magic’s ending.

The Review
The End of Magic
Magic is a born gift pulled from the power of the lapis moon. The story follows two mages, “one being a witch who thinks she’s a warlock”; Sander Bree, a kings mage and Rosheen Katell, a solitary mage who flies around on her griffin and helps those in need. The difference between these two is illustrated incredibly well from the beginning, even though they’re both people of magic, their personalities and morals are clearly defined. The point of this if for Stay to establish that in truth, they are exactly the same and both end up at the wrong end of the sword when the lapis moon is destroyed.
