The Dead Daughter takes the reader through the investigation of Kyla Gardener’s slaying, which the victim’s father has been charged with carrying out. The inquiry is examined by the author from a variety of angles, including the work of the police, effects on the family, and the work of private investigator Lee Callaway.
The author carefully explores the various reactions of the characters to the murder and the subsequent inquiries that uncover secrets. An terrific novel all around that is action-packed from start to finish!
The murder of Kyla Gardener served as the book’s central conflict, and it was followed by an investigation to determine what had happened and whether her father had indeed committed the crime as first police evidence would have us believe.
I thought the author did a great job of outlining the inquiry, and the way the book was written reminded me of the outlines of detective programmes (I mean this in the most positive way possible). The author has truly made it possible for readers to get a complete picture of what is happening and the effects of the first narrative line by avoiding focusing on one key character or point of view.
I had a great time reading this. I wanted to read for hours more despite the tiny chapters just to find out what would happen next! Additionally fascinating was watching Lee Callaway’s character grow. A private eye who has made some dubious life decisions, so a reader should certainly despise him, but the author presents him in such a way that he needs to be liked and understood.
While Lee Callaway’s acts are laudable throughout the text, it is his investigation that actually reveals how the plot unfolds and provides some genuinely intriguing and unexpected discoveries that are essential to the story. I thoroughly loved reading it, and I’d suggest it to anyone who loves mysteries or good detective shows!
About The Book
Can a father murder his only child?
Kyla Gardener’s dead body is found on her bed one early morning. She had been stabbed multiple times. Her father, Paul, has bloodstains on his shirt and his fingerprints are all over the murder weapon. Paul has no memory of what happened.
Private Investigator Lee Callaway was also at the Gardener residence on the night of the murder. He had been following Kyla’s mother, Sharon, who was having an affair with her yoga instructor.
When all evidence points to Paul as the murderer, Callaway has no choice but to take on the case. As he searches for answers, he uncovers a web of lies, secrets, and deceit.
The Review
The Dead Daughter
Truly enjoyed this book. Usually am not crazy about an author who jumps around from one character to another. This however was done tastefully. Not only did it add a little suspense, it made me want to keep reading to find out what happened. Also, there was just the right amount of characters. I never had to go back in the book and ask, "who was this ?" I am going to buy the next book in the series as Lee Callaway is a down to earth kind of guy who is learning from his mistakes.
PROS
- Introductions to the characters are curious and credibly trustworthy.
- Book plot was compelling, characters were well developed.
CONS
- The main character, not just of this book but an entire series, is not remotely likeable.
- The plot is ludicrous, the investigation rife with technical errors.
