Okay, I’ll admit that before I started reading this book series, I was a HUGE fan of the Bones TV show. Cross Bones #8 was excellent, but Flash and Bones #14 disappointed me after a few years. As a result, I had stopped paying attention to this series. That is, until I discovered The Bone Code #20 in my review stack.
Although the novels and television shows they served as inspiration for diverged (obviously), Tempe Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, served as the protagonist in both. I admire her dedication to science, as well as her matter-of-fact, rather dull views about the human race. She once reflected about an early Montreal winter storm and how she was never ready for it: Perhaps Quebecers as a whole didn’t read that year. Are you depressed about how quickly the daylight is fading? Fearing another protracted, gloomy season? Angry that it was too damn chilly since it was too damn early? Whatever the reason, the villagers had started working hard to trim the herd. allowing me to keep busy while I wait for the DNA results.
In the books, though, I have found her character to be much more endearing when she is associated with Andrew Ryan. Her sharp edges are rounded off by his playful taunting, which I suppose softens them. Additionally, Tempe and Ryan are living together in this title! The rapid-fire banter between this French-English crime-fighting duo in The Bone Code is fantastic. Additionally, the sexiness and depravity of the criminals they are hunting in these frighteningly current crimes are brilliantly balanced by the sizzle of their mature and refreshing mid-life romance, which offers lightness and levity. It was entertaining to see Tempe adopt the unusual position of good cop when she was paired with a female detective who was even more hard-nosed than she was.
The majority of the time, Reichs’ snappy narrative and character descriptions—which are reminiscent of Emma Viskic’s language style in the Caleb Zelic series—were punchy, and the unravelling of the commendably intricate criminal network was well-paced. Tempe did occasionally ask other scientists for more in-depth, laborious explanations than I believed she would have needed as a highly qualified forensic scientist. I assume it’s for the advantage of the lay reader. Maybe I’ve just read a lot about this issue lately… I’m not sure.
So certainly, I made the connections a little earlier than the fictitious Tempe did. However, I took pleasure in the topic’s intellectual stimulation and getting stuck into the complex, multifaceted cross-border research.
About The Book
Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, receives a call from the Charleston coroner while she is travelling to Isle of Palms, a barrier island off the coast of South Carolina. A medical waste container washed ashore on the beach during the storm. Two decaying bodies lie there, bound with electrical wire and wrapped in plastic sheeting. It’s horrifying to see how many of the details match up with a case Tempe worked on in Quebec fifteen years earlier. She takes a flight to Montreal to acquire information and persuade her supervisor Pierre LaManch to reactivate the cold case as her sense of dread grows. She also turns to her longtime love Andrew Ryan for counsel and consolation.
South Carolina is experiencing a storm of a different kind that is intensifying. Charleston residents are afflicted with a bacterium that, in the worst cases, can consume human flesh. Numerous people test themselves in a panic to see if they had a rare genetic abnormality that would have made them vulnerable. Eventually, Tempe shockingly learns that not only are the victims in the two horrifying murder cases connected, but that the killings and the disease spread also share a common source.
The Review
The Bone Code
Very good story. Believe it or not, it changed my mind about getting the Covid vaccine. Because Kathy R wrote about the vaccine so clearly and concisely, it caused me to ask some more questions and do some research and lo and behold I’ve decided to get the vaccine. Thanks Kathy.
