The final sea nymph Kyra’s closest companion is Phe. She secretly guards Kyra as well. Despite the fact that they are best friends, Phe has a murky history and has been chosen by the ruthless general Bastion to receive training in the shadows. When Kyra is kidnapped by the villainous Djall, Phe’s horrific and tragic background is revealed.
The majority of the plot revolves with Phe discovering her magical abilities, which make her exceptional and highly powerful, while also urgently trying to find a way to save Kyra from the heinous grasp of Djall.
For Phe, the protagonist of Spark, there is a strong “chosen one” theme. Finian, who constantly refers to her as “baby girl,” is my favourite character besides Phe, and I believe that they would have formed a great couple. From the outset, Phe and Roar’s romance seemed quite strained and unnatural.
Right now, I’m not sure how I feel about the Shadow Unit. Djall also gives me mixed feelings; as a villain, he comes off as being quite uninteresting. We don’t really get a clear picture of his personality or background other than the fact that he has a history of trying to appropriate other people’s magic and energy for himself. He talks via others and has influence over them.
The first half was incredibly exciting and fast-paced. I ate up every page, including all the exquisitely worded descriptions. I adore the way the author talks about the terrain and the physical characteristics of the characters. The reader is drawn into this grand fantasy universe right away by the flow.
In contrast, I thought the latter part of the novel lagged a little bit because of Phe’s continual attacks, which forced her to repeatedly break down and heal. As a result, Phe began to fear everyone she had previously believed she could trust. Readers of epic fantasy with a focus on secrets disclosed and the revelation of magic power should consider Spark.
About The Book
Phe lives a dual life.
Everyone knows Phe as the sickly best friend of Her Grace, Kyra Theonora, the last Water Nymph duty bound by a familial oath to protect the island country of Xafara. Only a select group of people are aware of Phe’s shadow side. Trained by General Bastion to be an assassin and Kyra’s secret weapon.
Everything changes when Kyra is abducted, exposing Phe’s cover and acting as a catalyst to Phe’s own bound magic, thrusting Phe into a world she’d thought a fantasy.
As Phe maneuvers the unfamiliar landscape of magic, grappling with one obstacle after another, she tries to figure out how to save her best friend. Will she survive this new magical world? Will she rescue Kyra? Will she sacrifice herself in the process?
Spark is the first book in a new adult fantasy series featuring action packed scenes, compelling characters, and a strong heroine.
The Review
Spark
The creativity of the story and characters is amazing! From page 1, you are drawn in and won't want to put it down. There is a great combination of action, suspense, heartache, joy, humor, drama, romance...it's all so beautifully combined. The world of magic that the author creates is one you won't want to leave. The author uses very descriptive and poetic language, which is a joy to read and really helps bring the story alive. Really looking forward to the sequel because you become very attached to the characters and their journeys and it's hard to say goodbye when you finish the book!
