The gorgeous cover of Sleeping Together is what initially drew my attention to it. Yes, I’m a complete snob when it comes to a nice cover. Congratulations on your stunning cover creation! I then read the book’s synopsis, and I became immediately interested in it. A tale about a medicine that enables dream encounters and connections between two people. Very intriguing premise!
I thought it was a nice approach to convey to the reader Vanessa’s fear and doubt that the novel begins with her baby/pregnancy nightmare. Many people may relate to Vanessa’s predicament of being in a relationship where the love is strong yet they want different things.
Altan being an Asian character was fantastic. Salute to variety! And for me, one of the main aspects of this narrative that contributed to how much I like it was his friendship with Vanessa and their interactions. There was humour that made me smile, sex (not very graphic) that made it a little steamy, a terrible boss that made me want to leap into the book and punch the guy in the face, important mental health issues that needed to be addressed, a romance that wasn’t overdone, and a page-turning plot that kept me up later than I should have.
The way Kitty Cook has described the characters’ dream states makes it easy for me to picture them as I read. We do get to know Vanessa and Altan very well throughout this novel, and the characters are likeable. Although I wasn’t fully enamoured with them, I was deeply intrigued by their narrative and by the enigma surrounding how the Morpheum drug was truly operating and how it would affect the users.
The tale of Sleeping Together is really imaginative, captivating, and interesting. It touches on some delicate issues and contains a very tiny science fiction element, which I really enjoyed. Knowing that this is the first book of a series was definitely a happy surprise because I feel like I still have a lot of unanswered questions and that these characters have a lot more tale to tell. Highly recommend if you want to read a different kind of romance.
About The Book
Vanessa Brown is having nightmares: about babies. Ever since her husband, Pete, mentioned he wanted to start a family, Ness has been trying to convince herself she’s stoked to spawn despite her inability to keep a cactus alive–and a decade-old secret she doesn’t like to remember. So when she catches her slacker-cool coworker, Altan Young, stealing sleeping medication from the pharmaceutical company they both work for, she decides to try the pilfered pills to finally find some rest.
But side effects of Morpheum include headaches, nausea, and possible mind melding–a fact Ness and Altan stumble upon when they share the same freaky sex dream. (Awkward.) Now these two colleagues are joined at the brain by night, experiencing dozens of fantastic sleep-staged adventures courtesy of a little imagination and a whole lot of drugs.
With the stress of being caught between the men of her literal and figurative dreams (not to mention her nightmare of a boss), Ness starts to enjoy snoozing more than being conscious–and the company of her work husband more than her real one. If she doesn’t wake up and smell the coffee soon, her dreamy escape could become a dirt nap in this feisty debut novel about the dark side of dreams’ coming true.
The Review
Sleeping Together
This is not a genre I generally reach for, but I was super excited for this author's work, and it did not disappoint. The plot is interesting, the pacing is great, the structure leaves you often unsure of just when/where you are, building nicely on the tensions created by Ness's drug induced dreamscape escapades. Her character is a mess, but she's a relatable mess, and the heavy topics addressed in the book are balanced with endlessly entertaining, hilarious and sexy flights of fancy. Finished it in three days!
