The appeal of locked-room thrillers is distinctive. Perhaps the limitations we are aware of give us the mistaken sense that the power dynamic between the amateur detective reader and mystery author has changed? Whatever the cause of their attractiveness, one thing is undeniable. Shiver by debut author Allie Reynolds is completely under her control.
Reynolds maintains tight control over this brilliant plot, just as her large, talented ensemble cast does. She gradually builds up the storytelling tempo and tension by switching back and forth between the present and a scene that occurred ten years earlier.
Reynold’s professional snowboarding background and respect for the constant perils of weather and terrain emerge from the pages as the remote surroundings of Shiver is vividly portrayed. But some of the characters involved are much more terrifying.
The narrator Milla is the underdog in a pack that is ferociously competitive. But there are numerous strategies for success… Who could she rely on now and then? What happened the day before that would affect their lives forever? The truth is slowly revealed, but not without some unexpected and startling turns. I read the second half of this book quickly.
Shiver is a skillfully handled, drama-filled action thriller that makes a good debut for Allie Reynolds. It is both intriguing and unnerving.
About The Book
When five friends learn that they have been purposefully left stranded in a deserted mountainside resort, a reunion weekend in the French Alps turns fatal.
When Milla receives an invitation to a reunion at the little ski area where her snowboarding career peaked, she forgoes everything to go. Even if she would like to forget what happened that winter, Curtis—the one person she can’t seem to let go of—is the one who extends the invitation.
Since the mysterious and stunning Saskia vanished ten years ago, the five friends haven’t seen each other. They realise they don’t know who truly brought them together and how far they will go to learn the truth, though, as an icebreaker game turns threatening. The past’s secrets are about to be revealed in a remote lodge perched high on a mountain, in the midst of a gathering snowfall.
Shiver is an incredibly ominous psychological debut that is like an Agatha Christie novel set in the Alps.

Shiver
Very entertaining and thrilling tale of the intensity of competition among elite athletes; in this telling, snowboarders. It’s got everything:action, a glamorous location, revenge, betrayal, mystery, sex, and ingenuity. I hate to finish but it was very satisfying.
