Wow! Because of how gorgeous the cover looked, I impulsively purchased River Woman, River Demon on Amazon. This was a fantastic book, so I’m thrilled I took a chance on it. This book, written by Jennifer Givhan, should not be missed. Eva believed she was overcoming her childhood horror and moving forward. But everything resurfaces when her spouse is detained for the death of her best friend. Really literally.
As young children, Eva’s childhood best friend perished by drowning. Now, her adult best friend has passed away under remarkably similar circumstances, and the police quickly become aware of this fact. Now Eva will have to find the source behind her pain, delving into her past. It is the only way to protect herself and her family.
“The moon vanishes as I open my eyes again. Every time I hold my breath, I wonder how long Karma was able to hold before also disappearing from this planet. Can I say wow once more? Since River Woman, River Demon completely blew me away—I’ll resist the urge to say it completely blew me out of the water—it feels entirely suitable here. That seems premature. Although it was a challenging read, it was SO expertly done. In all honesty, I find it impossible to forget.
Eva’s tale is sinister and captivating. She is dealing with a catastrophic situation in her present while overcoming a terrible history. It’s a lot, and occasionally it causes her to doubt herself (and thus, we question her narrative). It makes for a difficult read with numerous twists and turns.
The addition of magick simply served to increase the complexity of the narrative. It gave the universe, the story, and the characters new depths. all the while contributing to the concealment of the real story. It was flawless. River Woman, River Demon is my favorite so far. It was terrific, and I will be recommending it to all my reader friends (especially those that like thrillers/fantasy). So, go read it!
About The Book
Eva Santos Moon is a burgeoning Chicana artist who practices the ancient, spiritual ways of brujería and curanderisma, but she’s at one of her lowest points—suffering from disorienting blackouts, creative stagnation, and a feeling of disconnect from her magickal roots.
When her husband, a beloved university professor and the glue that holds their family together, is taken into custody for the shocking murder of their friend, Eva doesn’t know whom to trust—least of all, herself. She soon falls under suspicion as a potential suspect, and her past rises to the surface, dredging up the truth about an eerily similar death from her childhood.
Struggling with fragmented memories and self-doubt, an increasingly terrified Eva fears that she might have been involved in both murders. But why doesn’t she remember? Only the dead women know for sure, and they’re coming for her with a haunting vengeance.
As she fights to keep her family out of danger, Eva realizes she must use her magick as a bruja to protect herself and her loved ones, while confronting her own dark history. River Woman, River Demon is a mysterious incantation of reckoning with the past and claiming one’s unique power and voice.
The Review
River Woman, River Demon
This was the perfect October read for me, when I like to turn to the gothic and the supernatural. This literary thriller is set in the days before Halloween, when narrator Eva's husband is arrested for what appears to be a false charge. Or is it? Interwoven with folk magic and touches of the supernatural, it's much better written than the average thriller, which should be no surprise, given that the author is also a well-published poet. (Check out her poetry books too!)
