Teenagers and young adults will have no issue connecting with the romantic comedy Not Famous. Nick, the book’s main character, is someone you should get to know. His vantage point is entertaining and amusing. Every young adult experiences uncertainty about their future at some time, and this character has a distinct voice that I enjoyed getting to know as the story developed.
The characters are this book’s best feature; they are all well-developed and seem to play significant roles in the plot. The relationship between Nick and Alli is new and enjoyable; their love story is in no way formulaic. I loved how Nick and Alli each had their own passions and histories, which ultimately helped them develop as people.
Although they are far from being the “ideal” pair and their relationship has its share of awkward moments, there is no denying that they support one another in realising their potential. That’s a book I enjoy. I was particularly drawn to Matthew Hanover’s rapid and natural dialogue because of how effectively he writes.
In real life, I would converse with my pals in much the same way that the characters do in the stories. I also appreciate the surroundings a lot. As someone who spent many years living in the Boston area, I appreciated the depiction of the local music scene because the narrative is set there.
Additionally, there is a lot of character development, and I believe the plot held my interest. Although the tale largely kept up a quick pace, I do think there were a few instances were it slowed down a bit. I thought the book’s middle section was generally slow, but I think it ultimately picked up speed, especially toward the finish.
I was a little speechless after the finish since I couldn’t predict what would happen next. I recommend this book to everyone searching for a happy, romantic read. This book shows you that you shouldn’t let someone else’s hurt put you down. You’ll eventually need to rediscover the art of trust.
About The Book
What happens when two wounded people with secrets come together and fall in love?
When Nick gets down on one knee with a diamond in his hand, he has no doubt in his mind that Lauren, his long-time girlfriend, will say YES. But, instead of jumping up and down with glee, Lauren confesses to her infidelity, leaving Nick humiliated, alone, and distrustful.
But all that is about to change when he meets the endearingly awkward and shy Alli. Despite her quiet demeanor, Alli is like a walking firecracker — her hopes, dreams, and ambitions made all the more fiery by her raw talent for music and her incessant drive to make a name for herself.
Their chemistry is undeniable, but something about her feels out of reach.
When Nick discovers that Alli harbors a mind-blowing secret, something that could make or break her career, he assures her that he can handle it. And he can… until he can’t.
Still wounded by his ex’s betrayal, Nick grows irrationally jealous of Blake, a musician who seems a bit too interested in helping Alli’s career. Nick finds that Alli’s friendship with Blake is driving a wedge between them, and he starts to wonder… “What else is she hiding from me?” which Alli does not appreciate, not even one bit.
Will Nick let his jealousy get the best of him and lose Alli in the process?
Will love be enough this time around?
The Review
Not Famous
Matthew Hanover delivers a pitch perfect story in his debut novel. It’s a funny and touching story about learning to love and trust again. This story is filled with compelling characters. Alli is an incredibly loveable person. While she is naive and inexperienced when it comes to dating, she seems to be teaching Nick and his friends what being in a loving relationship is really all about. The dynamic between Alli and Nick is often times awkward, which lends itself to some of the more endearing moments. Nick is very relatable—especially as he tries to unpack his baggage.
