Wow. The descriptions of “JUMP” was fantastic. Pick up Tiffany Chacon’s charming romance, Jump, and take a vacation to Wellington to experience what it might be like to ride a 1,600-pound Grand Prix gelding through a course at a world-class equestrian event.
Things are about to get pretty horsy, and they do, as the novel sets the scene by beginning with a dictionary of horse words. The glossary is more of a fun element than a useful resource because Chacon does a fantastic job of drawing readers into the plot, especially for those who are not particularly knowledgeable with show horses.
Mila, the narrator of the book, is 21 years old and has a lot on her mind, mostly in relation to the accident that left her sister paralysed. With heartfelt scenes that will stay with me, Chacon skillfully tackles the trauma. And Mila’s development throughout the narrative adds to the impact of her struggle.
Sadly, the romance didn’t strike a chord with me as strongly as I’d hoped. It was the part I liked the least because it was based on a love triangle. First off, Mila’s two-year boyfriend recently dumped her without giving a reason. While she’s attempting to win him back, there is interesting conflict; but, in the first few chapters, he isn’t exactly a lovely person.
Although there are a few references to moments when they were happy, I often wished for additional explanation to help me appreciate the importance of what she was battling to restore since I had trouble understanding why she wanted him back. It’s simple to grow impatient with Mila when her ex-feelings boyfriend’s cause friction with her new beau.
Or the superbly crafted action sequences in which Mila is attentive to Cyrus and engaged in a sport she enjoys. Jump must be read for yourself to really appreciate the great writing in those passages. You’ll adore it, I’m certain. Overall, Jump is a charming love story ready to win hearts!
About The Book
It’s been a year since college senior Mila Kozak watched her sister Anya’s tragic accident on course at a horse show in Wellington, Florida. Since then, nothing has been the same. Her relationship with her sister is as shattered as Anya’s paralyzed body.
Her boyfriend of two years dumped her out of the blue and, even though she’s doing everything she can to win him back, he won’t give her the time of day. And her favorite thing in the world – show jumping – is tainted by the crippling fear she’ll end up like Anya.
Mila wants nothing more than to be her old life-of-the-party, live-in-the-moment self. But no matter what she does, she’s not that Mila anymore. When Mila rescues her friend and barnmate, Alex, from Immigration police, it sets them on a trajectory that’s as surprising as it is electrifying. But when everything Mila holds dear is threatened yet again, will she make the jump and land where she’s meant to be?
The Review
JUMP
This is a fabulous and engaging read! It provides terminology for equestrian lay persons and introduces the characters up front. Then the author weaves a precious story about a young rider's experiences with family tragedy, love, stress and excitement in horse jumping competitions and her journey through it all. It's a wonderful first novel that I recommend to all readers who enjoy reading emersive books.
