Elizabeth Luly’s contemporary romance, From LA to London with Love, about love, family, trust, and self-acceptance, was pleasantly surprising, superbly written, and heartwarmingly diverse. In this book, Chris Trent—yet another white, straight, appealing, cis-male Hollywood actor with the name Chris—travels to England to shoot a project and unintentionally runs into single mother Sophie Shah.
Starting a relationship has obviously not been on either of their radars, with Chris still in recovery from a publically humiliating breakup that led to months of reclusiveness and Sophie’s attention being on her baby and forthcoming business venture. As its title, synopsis, and adorable, pink cover might imply, I was anticipating a lighthearted, belly-laugh-inducing rom-com, but this book was anything but that.
In addition to introducing readers to a diverse and passionate group of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ characters, From LA to London, with Love also touches on issues related to LGBTQ+ allyship, the value of diversity and inclusion, mental health, and the effects of childhood trauma. The plot wasn’t at all formulaic or predictable, even though readers did get the meet-cute scene that every romance novel must have (which, for a moment, had me worried because of who the drink got spilled on).
It had unexpectedly many adventures and powerful conversations and messages that I could really relate to. A large and varied cast of personalities who all had a significant impact on Chris and Sophie’s relationship and personal development were also present in the book. The primary characters were quite endearing and understandable.
I admired the author’s ability to develop believable characters with backstories and experiences that the majority of readers, if not all of them, can identify with. The character development of Chris and Sophie, as well as how their shared experiences, vulnerable and honest conversations, and strong social support system all contributed to shaping it, was my favourite part of this book.
Overall, I suggest From Los Angeles to London, with Love to anybody seeking a well written modern romance that is full of adventure, a broad cast of characters, and inspirational ideas about family and self-acceptance. Of course, this one is also for all of you dog and puppy lovers out there!
About The Book
Sophie Shah thinks dating an American movie star is a terrible idea. For a start, she’s got her hands full with her baby son and new business venture. And she’s just not that interested in red carpets, fancy parties and private jets. Anyway, there’s no way the man recently voted the “sexiest man alive” would be interested in a single mom who lives with her parents… right?
Publicly humiliated, movie star Chris Trent has fled to London to film a period drama. Focused on redeeming his reputation and improving his (questionable) British accent, a new relationship is the last thing on his mind. And Chris doesn’t pack light—he brings all his baggage with him.
Sophie’s and Chris’s worlds couldn’t be more different, but as their relationship unfolds they begin to think that maybe, just maybe, they could have a future together. But some baggage is hard to offload.
The Review
From LA to London, With Love
This is Elizabeth Luly’s debut novel and I can’t wait to read more from her in the future! From the start you fall for Chris and feel for his situation and then meet Sophie and I personally loved her thinking and personality so of course these two would suddenly meet. The story moves along at a good pace and keeps you wanting to read more and more. Elizabeth really did an excellent job with bringing these characters to life and surprised you at times which were very nice surprises. Anyone who loves a good Rom-Com or just a touch of spicy love story this is the book for you!
