I’ve read a lot of fantasy books about magical worlds, superpowers, alternate universes, etc. But Earthshine by Graham Bower goes a step farther. It is not just a book about superheroes and science fiction. This novel has a lot more to give even though it is based on other worlds or realities.
For the protagonist, what starts as a routine yoga session quickly takes unexpected twists and turns that left me gasping for air. As a reader, you can never predict how a situation will turn out, which keeps you interested in the story. Even for a drink of water, it’s difficult to put this book down.
Steph and Emily are close friends. Emily consents to go with Steph to a yoga session at her persuasion. Emily has been wary of taking chances ever since she overcame cancer. However, the yoga class ends up being everything but typical. She had an extraordinary moment that she cannot explain.
While attempting to live a normal life, Emily experiences bizarre visions and near-death encounters that cause her to doubt the bizarre event in her yoga class. She travels to India with her pals in search of the answers to her questions. She meets Ramesh, a yoga instructor, there, who teaches her how to detect her incredibly potent ability to enter different realms.
The moment she thinks she has a handle on the situation, it all spirals out of control. The barrier collapses as a result of her dreams or access to other realms, letting creatures from other realms loose into the present. It becomes a page-turner because of what happens in the following pages. The book never has a dull moment. When you believe you know the outcome, the author throws you off course with unexpected turns.
A compelling novel by Graham Bower will draw you into its pages from the very first page. As I read, I experienced a variety of emotions, including sweating, trembling, and laughing aloud at the characters’ antics. The characters are realistic; they are not blown-up superhumans.
Through the characters, Graham has expertly woven feelings of friendship, love, family, resentment, loss, and survival instinct. There is also the issue of self-acceptance and having the courage to declare one’s sexual orientation. Pick this book up and you won’t regret the ride.

Now a secret government agency is hunting them and Em finds herself caught in the middle of a battle she doesn’t fully understand. She has to master her abilities quickly before her friends get lost in the multiverse forever.
The Review
Earthshine
This book hooked me right away. With a cast of memorable characters and a fascinating take on alternate realities based in yoga and Hindu spiritualism, it zips along at a quick pace that kept me turning the page. In fact, I read the whole thing in one day, and the twists kept me guessing until the very end. Definitely recommend for anyone who wants a fun fantasy adventure with a distinctive premise.
