It’s been said that giving someone authority will allow you to test their moral character. What would you do if the ability to direct your story was literally placed in your palm? This is what happens to Sophia Palmer, the primary suspect in the case of TikTok sensation Eva Flores’ disappearance. Since Eva was the one who originally ruined her life, she has nothing but utmost hatred for the girl. Sophia claims that she doesn’t care.
She just couldn’t pass up the chance to exact sweet revenge when one of her best friends gave her a leather journal that turned out to be a not-so-distant relative of the Death Note and a narrative writing assignment from her least favourite teacher at school.
However, there are always drawbacks to wishes. Additionally, as Sophia’s revenge tale spirals out of control, she begins to lose control of herself and her own life. Did she or did she not kill Eva Flores?
Jennifer Alsever’s Burying Sophia is narrated from several points of view and backed by video interviews, tidbits of text and e-mail communications, voicemails, TikTok clips, and Sophia’s doomed story itself.
The final few pages of Eva Flores’ mystery novel reveal an unexpectedly touching tale of growth and selflessness, making you want to slow down and simply feel, learn, and grow with the characters. Up until those last few pages, Eva Flores’ mystery novel intrigues, thrills, and makes you want to turn the pages as quickly as you can.
At its core, it also serves as a warning against making snap judgments about individuals based solely on what we see on social media because we can never truly know what goes on behind closed doors.
An absolute must-read! I would suggest Burying Eva Flores to people who enjoy young adult fiction with a hint of the supernatural and mystery. Anyone looking for a change from their regular preferences might want to look into this as well. Jennifer Alsever does a great job at encapsulating the numerous (often unspoken) concerns, sufferings, and hidden delights of being a young person in today’s society.
About The Book
Everyone thinks I killed Eva Flores. Sure, I hate how everyone was over the moon about her TikTok fame. And I suppose I got a little bit carried away with vengeance when she tried to ruin my life. But seriously, when my friend gave me that leather journal, I’d never had so much power in my life. It was intoxicating. Who wouldn’t have done what I did to Eva?
Now everyone thinks that just because she vanished in the forest after a party, that I killed her. That the blood on the jackets is proof. Or the text messages. The slightly weird thing I had with Eva’s dad. The fire.
The whole thing is far more complicated than you’d think. What happened to the horribly obnoxious, very complicated Eva Flores? I can’t really say. Perfect for fans of Holly Jackson and Karen M. McManus, this book will grab you and won’t let you go!
The Review
Burying Eva Flores
Deftly crafted YA story that tiptoes along the line between thriller and supernatural in a way that makes it impossible to put down. Sophia is as content as a teen with an absent dad and the family finances being tight could be. She has two close friends and little interest in the popular crowd. Then Eva, a Tik-Tok sensation moves to her small Colorado town and tries to befriend her. When Sophia shuns her, Eva begins a revenge campaign that's over the top, not only threatening Sophia's fragile tranquility, but her mom's job, their home, and even the cafe where Sophia works.
