The open waters hold adventure. The orphanage’s walls have kept Avalina Jones safe for the majority of her young life. But when unusual events start to happen, the headmistress is aware of it and tells Avalina. She can breathe underwater, and water snakes follow her.
As danger draws nearer, Avalina is forced to leave the orphanage and accept her role as Davy Jones’ heir. She is brought to an exclusive school for the children of pirates. Avalina might be the next victim of the Jones Heirs’ curse, which is unfortunate. Treasure hunts, teachings, and life-saving opportunities are all present.
The ideal action-packed middle grade adventure was this book (Avalina Jones and the Eye of the storm). I was intrigued right away by it. There were a few boring, backstory-heavy sections at the beginning, but they did contribute to the development of the vibrant and imaginative pirate universe.
Once the action heats up, the narrative flows with abundance of vivid imagery that helps the reader see the fantastical pirate world in which Avalina finds herself. Fantastic character, Avalina. She can be brazen and a little bit of a troublemaker, but she is also kind and observant.
Young readers will identify with and desire to be like her because of an incredible combination of her character attributes. She isn’t hesitant to get her hands filthy in order to stand up for what is right. According to the book’s blurb, it is ideal for Harry Potter lovers, and it is clear that the author heavily borrowed ideas from that series to use in this one.
Although at a much younger level, it has a familiar vibe. Although this could have been easily stretched to become a YA without any issues, there were points when I had to remind myself that this was intended for middle school and not a YA. There are a few spooky moments in the movie, but the main focus is on pirates.
So there is very little of the violence a parent could be concerned about. There will be many more of Avalina’s crazy experiences to come because this book is the first of a planned series of seven books. Readers will become engrossed in the series and excitedly anticipate the upcoming book.
