The descriptive first sentences of this title had me intrigued. She was haunted by the blood. She felt it splatter her skin as she took a shower and saw it pool beneath her feet as she walked down the street. I’ve only read one of Lisa Hartley’s books so far, Ask No Questions, but I won’t be the last. Her writing is solid and assured, with frequent tangible tension and suspense.
In a brand-new crime series starring Detective Caelan Small, this is Book 1. Caelan is a highly talented undercover agent, but she also has a mysterious side to her that many find difficult to understand because of the pressures of her job and how frequently the lines between work and personal life are blurred.
Hartley gradually draws readers into the lives of her main characters, showing how her rough exterior conceals a sensitive interior. This woman has been severely damaged by her experiences, and she has every reason to be cautious about which, if any, of her coworkers to trust. Along with being endearingly spunky and unafraid to voice her opinions, Caelan is a character whose survival and success readers can’t help but root for. The ideal lead in a crime drama.
And the Ask No Questions storyline is thrilling to read. Numerous twists and turns (perhaps too many for some and occasionally needing a little suspension of disbelief), but I prefer a good crime thriller that I can truly get lost in and become engrossed in)… a complicated web of lies originating from several motives. I also thought Hartley’s protagonist’s reverence for (and prudence in using) weaponry was unusual for the genre and highly energising. A great crime book, Ask No Questions has the perfect balance of mystery, action, and emotion. I’m excited to read the following book in the Detective Caelan Small Series.
About The Book
Detective Caelan Small, an undercover specialist, permanently departs the Metropolitan Police after a disastrous assignment. or so she believes. The perpetrator is then discovered in the UK. Caelan is swiftly dragged back into a risky investigation. But everything changes when the main character is unexpectedly killed.
Nothing is exactly as it seems. Everyone is a suspect, even close friends and coworkers. Caelan is being instructed to stop asking questions because someone in the Met is involved. That is not an option since Caelan needs clarification at all costs. A must-read new series begins with Lisa Hartley’s spine-tingling new criminal thriller. It’s ideal for Robert Bryndza and Angela Marsons fans and will keep you guessing right up until the very end.
The Review
Ask No Questions
Outstanding! I picked this one up as I needed a Q in the title for a challenge – and what a win! Detective Caelan Small quit the Met after a disastrous operation left her shattered. When she was approached by one of her colleagues while she was holidaying overseas, urged to return to the fold, Caelan initially refused. Why put herself through that again? But she was persuaded by a name from the past…
