A Shift in Shadows by Maddox Grey
Nemain, a cat shapeshifter who was rescued from captivity by her ex-boyfriend Sebastian, a warlock, and a swarm of vampires, is dealing with PTSD, trauma, and betrayal. Nemain notices that Sebastian’s hunt for her has become more intense after regaining a sense of normalcy.
Nemain and her supporters, including Magos, the vampire who freed her from imprisonment (and torture), set out to defeat him and his goals because they think the reason is because of her odd magical talents. Nemain discovers a deeper scheme as she explores the realms where humans, fae, and other magical beings live.
Sebastian, the warlocks, and the vampires are all involved in this one, and they will stop at nothing to get Nemain back into their hands. In the meantime, Nemain looks into why her magic is so different from everyone else’s and what will happen to her if (not when) anyone finds out about her true power.
All supernatural beings, including fairies, mermaids, warlocks, witches, vampires, werewolves, and others, live side by side with humans in the world the author has imagined (some of who know of their existence). This universe is more magical than those created by previous authors because magic is still a mystery to all of the supernaturals.
Please be aware that some readers may be triggered by the book’s level of violence. This urban fantasy romance (A Shift in Shadows) is the first in a new series. The protagonist is a cat shapeshifter who battles PTSD, trauma, and betrayal as she pursues retribution and safety (for herself and for those she cares about).
Fans of this genre won’t find anything particularly surprising about the plot or the character development in this novel, but the world-building is what really stands out. The cliffhanger at the end of the book also informs readers that there will be more even though the conflict is resolved. This novel will appeal to readers who like Amelia Hutchins, Heather Killough-Walden, Laurell K. Hamilton, Ilona Andrews, and Seanan McGuire.
About The Book
Nemain is a feline shapeshifter with dangerous skills and even more dangerous magic. This is the first in the series where Nemain is being held captive from her ex-boyfriend Sebastian and vampires who are hellbent on torturing her in order to make her crack. After being rescued, Nemain realizes that she will be in a constant battle of will against Sebastian who is his continuing his search for her. Not only does she have to worry about that, but also her strange magic which her parents told her never to reveal. Follow Nemain on her journey to outwit her foes. This book continues with a cliffhanger at the end. I can wait to listen to the next in the series.
