The esteemed Dr. Greg Bishop’s son, Emergency Room physician Kevin Bishop, is also a physician. Kevin gets suspended after a few mistakes (including one that was not his fault but was placed on him) and is sent back to Long Grove, Illinois, where his father still lives, his son Alex is visiting from college for the summer, and a job Greg had secured for Kevin is waiting for him there.
While helping at the hospital with his grandfather, Alex is stabbed by a mentally ill patient, who then attacks him, leaving him in severe condition. The Bishop family is then thrust into a chaotic situation from which they must flee after a weird incident during the surgery to save Alex’s life has an unanticipated outcome.
What they find has the potential to either completely destroy them or change the course of medicine in the future. Despite not being a fan of the supernatural or otherworldly genre, I thought this thriller “A Field Within” was an interesting look at what it means to have a soul.
The question of whether or not one has a soul is susceptible to interpretation, largely depending on what religion one was reared in or continues to practise today, if any. This quick read investigates the soul in a novel approach that, fair warning, may be immoral to some but makes an intriguing claim in the world of fiction. The book had some lengthy passages, but it also had some incredibly addictive and endlessly readable portions.
A sequel to this topic might easily be supported by the cliffhanger ending. Overall, I think “A Field Within” is pretty engrossing and might spark a lot of debates among readers regarding the issue, its potential implications, and what they hold to be true.
About The Book
Kevin Bishop knows chaos. It stares him in the face every day. He’s an emergency physician, like his renowned father, and he’s trained to help people through their darkest hours.
But something’s changed. Kevin’s losing pieces of himself. He’s losing control.
In search of a new start, he returns to Long Grove, Illinois, his childhood town, only to find that chaos has followed him. A shocking accident forces his family to deal with unexpected consequences that tests their capacity to heal to the limit.
The Bishops are thrown into an abyss, and must find a way to the light. But what they discover when they do is so powerful it will either change the future of medicine or destroy them completely.
The Review
A Field Within
As scary as it may seem, I have seen the real difference in my own Father. He suffered a heart attack and was brought back twice. He survived a heart surgery and 30 days in the ICU. Then pneumonia before finally returning home. I can’t express how elated we were to still have him with us. So just imagine the hurt and shocked disappointment when he told us that we should have let him die! He was never again the robust person who loved and lived for his family. We had him for eleven more months. But he let us know that he was never again the person that we had known and loved. Sometimes it’s better to them go!
